* Description of chondroitin
Chondroitin is an essential component of cartilage and is naturally produced by the body. It is also present in the bones, skin, cornea and membrane of the arteries. It contributes to the formation and maintenance of cartilage tissue. The role of this tissue is to ensure the retention of water in the cartilage and its elasticity, as well as the strength and flexibility of the joints.
As with glucosamine, it is considered that chondroitin can relieve the pain of osteoarthritis. In addition, it may help stop or slow degeneration of joint tissues. The mode of action of chondroitin is beginning to be better understood. It is suspected that, on the one hand, it promotes the reconstruction of the cartilage and partially inhibits the enzyme which destroys it (hyaluronidase). On the other hand, it would act similarly to glucosamine in the formation of cartilage and synovial fluid. New data show that chondroitin could inhibit osteoclasts, which are cells playing an important role in bone substance loss. It would also be active in the inflammatory process. Commercial supplements are usually made from cartilage from farmed cattle or, more rarely, from pigs.
On the shelves
The cost of manufacturing chondroitin supplements is much higher than that of glucosamine supplements. Perhaps this is why analyzes conducted in the United States reveal that some supplements contain very little chondroitin compared to what is stated on their labels. Regulations are tougher in Canada. Manufacturers and distributors are required, among other things, to provide Health Canada with analyzes demonstrating that the active ingredient content of their natural health products conforms to their label. The US Food and Drug Administration does not require this quality control.
A diet based on products rich in vitamins is essential to regenerate the cartilage naturally.
Gelatin is a product found in many desserts. In addition to being easy to prepare, gelatin is an excellent
natural remedy for joint regeneration.
Several studies have shown that the consumption of gelatin can greatly assist in the regeneration of cartilage.
The recommended intake is 10 grams per day, and regular intake of gelatin can prevent the unpleasant symptoms of osteoarthritis. Gelatin is rich in protein and contains 10 essential amino acids, such as proline and hydroxyproline, which help regenerate muscle tissue.

Turmeric is a root that contains a specific molecule, curcumin used for many years in traditional medicine. It is a powerful antioxidant protecting the body from damage caused by free radicals and helping to fight against inflammation. It is also known to slow the demineralization of the bones.
Turmeric is therefore the natural anti inflammatory reference in the case of inflammatory joint pain and osteoarthritis - since it inhibits several causes of cartilage destruction.
Researchers in Montreal, Canada, have discovered that the IL-1 protein is the major "cartilage degeneration factor in arthritis." The IL-1 protein would trigger a chemical phenomenon causing the erosion of essential components of the cartilage cells. Following laboratory testing of treating human cartilage cells with turmeric, there was a suppression of 50 to 97% of the main steps of this destruction chain reaction. Turmeric may also alleviate the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. A treatment with turmeric has been prescribed to people suffering from this disease in order to compare the effectiveness with the drug phyenylbutazone. Turmeric was found as effective as medications, but without the side effects.
In addition to protecting against physical troubles, turmeric could make you happy. Preliminary studies in mice show that turmeric is a powerful antidepressant.
According to the researchers, turmeric causes chemical changes in the brain similar to the effect of antidepressants called monoamine oxidase inhibitors, but without the side effects associated with them (J Ethnopharmacol 2002 ;83:161-165).
The elderly who live in the traditional villages of India have the lowest prevalence of Alzheimer's disease worldwide. Since turmeric is used to enhance virtually all dishes, researchers believe that this herb is a powerful agent of memory protection (Neurosci Lett 2001; 27 : 57).
This degenerative disease is characterized by cellular inflammation and by the presence in the brain of senile plaques. During laboratory tests, researchers at the University of Illinois in Chicago discovered that turmeric prevented the formation of these plaques (J Nat Prod 2002; 65 : 1227-1231).
At the University of California at Los Angeles this time, researchers submitted mice to conditions favorable to the formation of amyloid protein plaques. Compared to control mice, those receiving turmeric had 43-50% fewer plaques in the brain. Rats consuming only corn oil were compared to others that received corn oil and turmeric. After two weeks of this diet, the cornea of the animals was examined for traces of the chemical changes associated with the formation of cataracts. An international team of researchers studied four groups of six rats. For a period of four weeks, each group received fish oil and alcohol; Fish oil and sugar; Fish oil, alcohol and turmeric; Fish oil, sugar and turmeric.
In rats fed with fish oil and alcohol, there was an engorged liver, necrosis and inflammation. Treatment with turmeric prevented both inflammation and necrosis caused by alcohol. In addition, turmeric inhibited the molecular changes associated with liver disease (Am J Physiol Gas-trointest Liver Physiol 2003; 284 : G321-327).
University Researchers Vanverbilt in Nashville (Tennessee) are researching the potential of turmeric as a cure for multiple sclerosis (MS). After predisposing mice to a disease similar to MS, turmeric was injected into some of them. While control mice developed severe paralysis, those treated with turmeric had no symptoms (J Immunol 2002; 15 : 6505-6513).
